The Meltdown
Meltdown was a Block Party that was used as a vehicle to (1) Re-introduce the community to Emancipation Park (2) Encourage Community wellness through activities and educational materials from vendors and (3) Identify community families and youth to participate in summer programs that address the incidence of Childhood Obesity.
The event will featured music, local youth entertainment groups performances, complementary healthy food options, a host of sport demonstrations, a 3 on 3 tournaments, several physical fitness demonstrations and a community bike ride.
The Meltdown served as the beginning to a community initiative to take a grassroots approach to address Childhood Obesity by organizing, educating, and advocating for a safe space (Emancipation Park) for our young people to be healthy and live well.
Childhood Obesity Taskforce
HCSIA has partnered with the Emancipation Park Wellness Team, Houston Parks and Recreation, The Mayors Wellness Council and the Boykins Youth Foundation to form a Childhood Obesity Taskforce. This Taskforce will work collectively towards creating a healthier and well community in the 3rd Ward area near the park.
The taskforce was created to address childhood obesity in Houston’s inner-city, urban African American minority communities. According to the National Center for Disease Control, over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates has more than doubled for preschool children and adolescents, and tripled for children between the ages of 6 and 11 years of age. Experts in this area have concluded that inactivity and poor eating habits directly contribute to obesity.
The taskforce hosted “Meltdown”, a block party in an effort to inform and educate Houston’s urban communities on the obesity epidemic that is affecting the lives of many Americans.
