City of Galveston Rethinks Smoke Free Ordinance
06/23/09 Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas recently asked the Galveston City Council to reconsider having a smoking ban for the City of Galveston. In 2006 Mayor Tomas voted against an ordinance would have made Galveston smoke free except in private clubs. Many opponents of the 2006 ordinance were against the notion of “private clubs” being exempted and described such a provision as “unfair”. The Galveston City Council will be meeting to review the issue and discuss the possibility of bringing the ordinance back for a vote. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) will regulate Tobacco
06/09 President Barack Obama recently signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act into law to allow for governmental regulation of Tobacco. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is a ground breaking piece of legislation to change how cigarette packages are labeled, how cigarettes are marked and sold, even regulate cigarette ingredients including setting a legal amount of nicotine allowed.
Skeptics argue that the legislation does not go far enough in eliminating tobacco and the dangers associated with tobacco use.
